Kiteboarding 4 Cancer Raises $60,000 for Cancer
Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 10:20PM I'm partial to this event because, well, I run it. It's my baby. Kiteboarding 4 Cancer is truly an amazing event -- this year, however, was our best year yet. Donations might have been down, but stoke and participation were WAY up! Here's how it works. Athletes raise money through fundraising prior to the event. On event day, they kite a 6-hour endurance race around a course on the Columbia River. It is grueling. It is not designed to be easy. It is designed to represent what people with cancer go through every day.
There is also a Standup Paddle Endurance Race, and for 2009 - a Slider Box 4 Cancer - a 62 foot long, 8 feet tall Fun Box for the daring park-style riders to hit throughout the day. We raise funds for our beneficiaries through a silent auction, live auction, raffle, and beer and food sales. Additionally, corporate sponsors donate Dollars-Per-Lap for the endurance races. There is live music, art, kiteboarding, activities for the kids and adults alike.
If you are new to kiteboarding, this is an event that you won't want to miss. Even if you can't stay upwind to ride in it, you can volunteer or just sit and watch! It is an awesome site and an incredible vibe unlike any other. Dates for the 2010 Kiteboarding 4 Cancer and Standup Paddle 4 Cancer have been set for July 9-11!! Put it on your calendar!!
